Pastor Best’s Life’s Foundations For Faith And Action

The Bible is the inspired Word of God to all will receive it, totally trustworthy for life direction and wellness being superior to conscience and reason but not contrary to conscience or reason (II Timothy 3:15-16; I Peter 1:23-25; Hebrews 4:12)

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, one with the Father and evident by His indwelling Spirit in all who have accepted Him as Savior and Lord.

Without accepting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, we are lost and self-destructive. (John 3:16-17; Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23)

Humankind’s only hope is in Jesus Christ, both for this world and the world to come. (John 10:10, John 14:27, John 14:1-3, John 14:6,7)

Humankind’s inner peace and life witness comes only through the indwelling of Jesus’ Spirit. (Acts 1:8; Romans 8:6-14)

God has awesome life-fulfilling plans for everyone who commits themselves to His Son living their lives out through His Spirit; all we need to do is accept God’s plans for us and then live them out. (Ephesians 3:14-21; John 14:22-23)

Jesus is at the right hand of the Father praying for us right now. (Romans 8:33-34)

Jesus is coming to receive all who love and serve Him for the eternal celebration of complete union.(John 14:1-3, John 17:20-26)

I was trying to live life in my own way and in my own strength. I was religious, attended a Bible-believing church every week, led the choir, taught Sunday school, and was even a genuine born-again Christian, but Christ wasn't in control. I was living my life and faith centered on my ideas instead of his, and with a constant sense of guilt and inadequacy. My life centered on trying to prove myself in order to be acceptable to others, to do things that people felt I did well in. I discovered photography as a young adult and received many compliments on my work. I felt more accomplished in photography than I did in teaching music, even though I enjoyed teaching; and doing photography wasn't as stressful as was teaching. I accomplished several professional goals in teaching, but the stress in reaching those goals was overwhelming and I began to establish plans to turn to photography full-time.My plans of establishing a photography studio as income seemed to work at first, and though my work brought many compliments, not enough of it was coming in with my business eventually going bankrupt. I remember sitting in my studio commiserating and saying, "It's all falling apart."Out of the ceiling came a voice, "It's all going according to plan.” and I responded, "Well it’s a lousy plan."That was the beginning of my surrender to doing things God's way instead of my way.

I accepted Christ as my Savior as a child at Billy Graham's first movie, "Oiltown, USA". But my life-change came when I moved from just believing in him for my salvation to surrendering control to him for my living.I wrestled with a lot of guilt because the church I had grown up seemed to emphasize that 'getting saved' was the most important thing in life, but it didn't teach much about living other than teaching that there's a lot of things you can't/won't do if you really love the Lord; Christ might return at any moment and you wouldn't want to be caught doing something unrighteous. It seemed to me that what I learned was that God was very interested in my eternal life, but not as interested in my earthly life; I believed we were expected to make it through life as best we could through Bible study, prayer and fellowship with other believers.

But then I was told that God had accepted me and had a special plan for me, and that He wanted my earthly life to be fulfilling as well as my spiritual life and that He wanted to empower me for living out his plans for my life here and now. This realization changed my outlook and I put Jesus in charge of everything.I surrendered and accepted his acceptance and said, "Okay Lord, it is no longer my life. It is your life." Essentially I gave up ownership of my life and it has made a world of difference. I now feel truly empowered to do things through Christ who gives me strength, not to live my life, but to live his life. Have I been visited by adversity and problems, some of them of my own making? Of course! But now I've got the Lord to lead me through the times knowing that in his strength and guidance, I can do all things, learn through all things, and share his strength through all things.
